My second grader hated reading -- hated it. His test scores finally started to reflect it, so I decided to help him make a change with some books he'd find interesting. When we started the first book, he was overwhelmed by the "chapter book" nature of these (they were a bit above his level), and we were alternating reading paragraphs, would cover a chapter a night, and he still complained nonstop. By the end, he was reading silently (voluntarily!) and begged to stay up to finish the book -- six chapters in one night!
