National Park Books for Kids: Fiction Books & Guides

 

National park books give kids a story set somewhere they can actually visit. This list helps you pick one, whether your kiddo wants a mystery or a field guide for an upcoming trip.

The Campground Kids: National Park Adventures by C.R. Fulton is a best-selling chapter book series for ages 8-12. Siblings Isaiah and Sadie and their cousin Ethan camp in a different real U.S. national park in each book. There are 14 numbered books: Books 1–13 are available now, and Book 14, Bryce Canyon Blizzard, is available for preorder.

Choose Fiction or Nonfiction

Pick fiction if your child wants a story to follow, and nonfiction if you're planning a trip and want facts, maps, and things to spot. 

Many families use one of each: a novel for the car ride and a guide for the park itself.

• Choose fiction if your child is 8–12 and likes mysteries, survival stories, or series they can keep reading. Start with the adventure fiction section below.

• Choose nonfiction if you want to learn about a park's wildlife and landmarks before you go, or give a kid something to check off during the visit.

• Choose a picture book for younger siblings who want to join in.

Adventure Fiction for Ages 8–12

The Campground Kids: National Park Adventures (C.R. Fulton, Bakken Books)

 

Each book pairs a mystery or survival problem with a camping trip, and each one centers on a character theme such as honesty or perseverance. The books can be read on their own, but the characters grow across the series, so starting with Book 1 can be great.

National Park Mystery Series (Aaron Johnson)

Five books, ages 8–12, about 280 pages each. Jake inherits his late grandfather's search for a centuries-old mystery and follows his codes and maps with friends Amber and Wes. The series begins in Mystery in Rocky Mountain National Park and continues in Discovery in Great Sand Dunes National Park, then Grand Canyon, Zion, and Yosemite. The longer books suit confident readers.

The Mystery at Yellowstone National Park (Carole Marsh)

A single book from the Real Kids! Real Places! series, ages 8–12, about 158 pages. Christina and Grant snowmobile into Yellowstone with their grandparents and find geysers, bison, and a historical mystery. It's a good fit before a winter visit. 

The Campground Kids: National Park Adventures Books in Order

Although the books are numbered, you can begin with whichever national park sound most exciting to your reader. Each book has its own mystery, but from Book 10 on, a storyline about Uncle Elliott and the search for a Lost City carries into The Campground Kids: Lost City Adventures.

Campground Kids Books 1–5

1. Grand Teton Stampede — Grand Teton National Park. On the kids' first big camping trip, a nighttime stampede leaves tracks that don't add up. 

2. Smoky Mountain Survival — Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A guilty secret and a survival challenge test when honesty matters most. 

3. Zion Gold Rush — Zion National Park. A fossil discovery starts a treasure-hunting mystery in Zion's canyons. 

4. Rocky Mountain Challenge — Rocky Mountain National Park. At survival camp, the kids learn new skills and learn to rely on each other. 

5. Grand Canyon Rescue — Grand Canyon National Park. A puzzle box sets off a treasure hunt that tests the kids' problem-solving. 

Books 6–10

6. Yellowstone Sabotage — Yellowstone National Park. While backcountry camping, the kids help a scientist whose equipment has gone missing, and a boot print suggests sabotage. 

7. Yosemite Fortune — Yosemite National Park. The kids search for treasure rumored to be hidden somewhere in the park. 

8. Acadia Discovery — Acadia National Park. The kids return from a hike to an empty campground, with a hurricane on the way. 

9. Glacier Vanishing — Glacier National Park. A strange trip ends with the whole family vanishing during a game. 

10. Arches Legend — Arches National Park. Uncle Elliott sends the kids looking for the Navigem, a gem missing for decades. 

Campground Kids Books 11–14

11. Olympic Pursuit — Olympic National Park. With the Navigem and a map, the kids wait for Uncle Elliott, who has gone silent. 

12. Joshua Tree Mirage — Joshua Tree National Park. A decoded message sends the kids after a hidden obsidian spear, and someone is following them. 

13. Hawaii Volcanoes Medallion — Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. A side trip turns into a mystery about a ruined sand sculpture, missing animals, and a medallion. 

14. Bryce Canyon Blizzard — Bryce Canyon National Park. A blizzard buries the family's winter campsite and blocks the trail home. Preorder: expected to ship October 30, 2026.

Pair a Book With Your Park Trip

Real national park visitor guidance:

The stories above include stampedes, storms, and kids exploring on their own. Those are fictional events, not trip advice. Before any visit, check the park's official NPS page for current alerts, closures, and safety rules.

Many national parks offer a free Junior Ranger program! Ask at the visitor center whether the park you're visiting has one. Kids complete activities during the visit and earn a badge, which most parks give only in person.

Before you buy, read the free opening chapters of Book 1, Grand Teton Stampede, with your child. 

In the opening, twelve-year-old Isaiah finally gets the camping trip he's been asking for. On the second night in Grand Teton, a thundering herd heads straight for his tent.

As you read, check three things:

• Reading level. Book 1 measures 720L (ATOS 4.9), the highest of the series books measured so far. If the sample feels comfortable, the rest of the series should too.

• Suspense. The stampede is exciting but not graphic. Notice how your child reacts to that level of tension.

• Interest. Does your child want to know who was behind the stampede? That's a good sign they'll keep reading.

If the sample is a hit, Grand Teton Stampede is available on its own or in The Campground Kids (Books 1–5).
